Jack Dalton was either a "dapper, well-dressed ladies man" or a "scoundrel" depending on who you asked. The Chilkat Tlingits controlled the three main trade routes to the interior over the Chilkat, Chilkoot and White Passes, thus monopolizing trade with the Athabascan Indians. The name "grease trail" was given to these routes, as the most important trade item carried over. Despite its short existence--from to , when it was superceded by the relative ease of the Chilkoot and White trails--the Dalton Trail was also a flashpoint for conflict with the local Natives, border disputes between Canada and the US, and the jumping-off point for yet another gold strike at .

  In , Dalton established a pack trail to the Yukon, partly following the route he and the Leslie party had followed earlier. The Klondike gold rush would find him prepared, and the Dalton Trail became an important gateway to the gold fields. According to historian and author Pierre Burton, Dalton was a respected figure in Dawson.   “When I reached this place (Pyramid Harbour) I found that the stories of gold had leaked out, and already a well equipped party of more than 30 men had landed here,” said Arthur Thompson in the book Gold Seeking on the Dalton Trail.
